Preventing Unauthorized Domain Hijacking

Your domain name is one of your most valuable digital assets. To protect you from unauthorized transfers or domain theft, registrars implement a security feature known as a Transfer Lock (also called ClientTransferProhibited status). When locked, the registry will reject any requests to move the domain to another provider.

How to Unlock and Migrate Your Domain

If you find cheaper prices at a partner registrar (like Namecheap or Hostinger) and want to transfer your domain, you must follow a standard security procedure:

  1. Disable Registrar Lock: Log in to your current registrar dashboard, find the domain settings, and toggle off the transfer lock.
  2. Get Auth Code (EPP Key): Request the authorization code. This unique secret key validates your ownership and permits the new registrar to request the transfer.
  3. Check WHOIS/Contact Info: Ensure your administrator email address is up to date, as confirmation links are sent there.
  4. Observe 60-Day Lock Rule: ICANN rules prohibit domain transfers within 60 days of initial registration or a previous transfer.
